With another presidential election just a few days away, I want to encourage the PBC family to think and act rightly as followers of Jesus. Here are four steps you should take on or before Election Day:

Pray

Here are a few things you can be praying for in the days ahead: Pray for the safety of our nation. Pray for the candidates in both parties. Pray for a fair election. Pray for a peaceful transition of power. Pray for wisdom to know how you should vote. Pray for faith to trust God regardless what happens.

Think

As you prepare to vote, you should spend time thinking about how you should vote. Begin by determining which issues matter most to you. While there are dozens of important issues on the table during each election (ranging from school choice, immigration, the economy, environmental issues, and more) I believe Christians should prioritize those issues that cause the greatest harm to those who bear the image of God.

It's no secret that I believe abortion is the greatest injustice in our world today. Unfortunately neither the Republican party nor the Democrat party is truly and fully pro-life, but their views on abortion are not identical. One party treats abortion access almost like a religious sacrament, while the other has fought for the unborn in the past and continues to offer some support to pro-life issues.

It's also no secret that I believe the LGBTQ ideology is rebellion against God that hinders human flourishing. Again, neither political party pledges to uphold a biblical view of sex, marriage, and gender. But their views on these issues are not identical. One party is wholly committed to the transgender revolution, including medical and surgical experimentation on confused children. While the other party offers some restraint to the most radical ideas which irreversibly damage our young people.

Once you've thought through which issues matter most, you should review the names on your ballot and do your best to determine where they stand on those issues.

Vote

How many people throughout history never had an opportunity to choose their leaders? How many people living in our world today have no idea what a safe and fair election is like? How many people have sacrificed their lives so that our country remains free? To simply ignore all those questions and stay home on Tuesday reeks of spoiled arrogance. Christians should vote if they are able. It's a faithful stewardship of an incredible gift.

Trust

Like many of you, I expect to be glued to the television on Tuesday night to see how the election turns out. And yet, I must fight to trust God regardless of what happens. Let us fight to have faith like Daniel the prophet: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding" (Daniel 2:20-21).

Whatever happens to America, Jesus is still King. And the gates of hell will not prevail against His church!
